Website Redesign Checklist: What to Fix Before You Start Over

Decide whether your business website needs focused improvements or a redesign, and plan the content, contact flow and URL changes before work begins.

Separate a business problem from a style preference

A website can feel dated without needing to be rebuilt. Start by writing down what is actually getting in the way: customers cannot find your services, mobile text is hard to read, booking links fail, or you cannot update important information. These problems suggest specific work. “Make it more modern” is not a useful scope on its own.

Walk through the site as a first-time customer. Choose one service, find its details and try the contact or booking process. Record the exact page and step where you hesitate. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to do the same without coaching them.

If the structure works and the content is current, a focused update may be enough. Our Website Management plan covers agreed ongoing work; major redesigns and new functionality are quoted separately.

Check the five areas that affect real visitors

  1. Message: Does the homepage explain the current business and service area?
  2. Content: Are services, prices, hours and photographs accurate?
  3. Mobile: Can someone read, navigate and tap buttons without sideways scrolling?
  4. Contact: Do forms, phone links and booking links complete the intended action?
  5. Maintenance: Can you or your provider make routine updates without rebuilding the page?

Write down the impact of each issue and the smallest useful correction. A broken contact form deserves attention before a decorative animation. A service you no longer offer should be removed or clarified before adding another landing page.

Protect useful content and existing URLs

Before replacing anything, inventory the pages that are live. Save their addresses, titles and main content. Check available Search Console and analytics data to see which pages receive search traffic or lead to inquiries. Do not assume a quiet-looking page has no value.

Keep working URLs when you can. If a page moves, map its old address to the most relevant replacement with a permanent redirect. Do not send every old page to the homepage. Google’s site-move guidance covers URL mapping and redirects. A redesign does not automatically require changing the domain.

Agree on the project before design begins

A useful brief identifies the audience, the primary action, the pages needed and who supplies copy and images. List required integrations such as bookings, payments or forms. Make responsibilities explicit: design approval, account access, content review and launch testing.

Ask what counts as a revision and how requests outside the scope are handled. Confirm the ongoing costs for domains, hosting, third-party tools and maintenance. Avoid treating an initial build price as the lifetime cost of the website.

Our Miami web design service can include a redesign based on an agreed scope. The Slay Minded Esthetics project shows actual website work, without promising the same business outcome for every project.

Test the new experience before launch

Review the site on a phone, tablet and desktop. Open menus with a keyboard, read form errors, test important links and check the confirmation after an inquiry. Confirm that real contact details and approved policies appear in the right places.

After publishing, check redirects, the sitemap and the live form again. Search Console can help identify crawl or indexing issues as Google revisits the site. Keep a rollback copy and agree on who will monitor the launch.

The goal is a clearer, easier-to-use site that your business can maintain. If you have a list of problems but are unsure whether they call for updates or a rebuild, tell us about your current website.
